A Letter to Park Presidio Neighbors from Teri Green, Workday Support Coordinator

Dear Park Presidio Neighbors…..

I hope you have noticed the maintenance currently being done on the Blvd.  After 2 years of whole-hearted effort, starting with the Geary Quad and working north and south, the Blvd gardening is going in the right direction.  The  2007 major effort by the “Task Force” was a starting point for what amounted to taking care of some of the safety issues, removal of homeless encampments and a general “attack” mode on ivy, blackberries and trash. This work was instrumental in getting the Blvd “under control”.

Mother Nature also played a role in the felling of several large trees and branches.  These events though have brought a renewed awareness to the age and care of the Blvd trees.   As mentioned earlier by Greg, the Tree Assessment is a direct response to this issue.

Kristin Bowman, Rec & Park Volunteer Coordinator,  continued support has generated the 2nd Annual Deloitte Day which includes  PG & E volunteers this June.  Approximately 200 volunteers will descend on the Blvd on  Friday, June 6th from 9-12.  Be on 200 Funston to see this group in action, working their way down the Blvd. Deloitte and Touche has chosen Park Presidio Blvd as their annual volunteer day.  I can’t say how happy I am to see 200 volunteers!!

In addition to the Giant June Volunteer Workday, the City Wide Clean Team will once again be working with us on July 12th. The focus of this workday is clearing ivy, blackberries, and picking up trash. Park Presidio Neighbors play a large part in this effort and the community building aspect has been very satisfying.

Unfortunately Kristin could not be here tonight,  but my gratitude goes beyond words, as she has been our staunch supporter for many, many years.

Last year’s Pilot Planting at Geary & 400 14th is doing very well. I encourage everyone to take a stroll and see how it is coming along.  All the plants selected have done very well. As we start to do some plantings this fall, my hope is that some of these plants will be available for all blocks.

2008 has rewarded us with a new gardener Supervisor, Chuck McMackin and 6 full time gardeners for the Richmond District.  I have developed the workday schedule for 2008 with Lorraine Banford, Kristin Bowman, Chuck McMackin and Carol Brost.  Please check the website for the  workday schedule thru November.

In closing, I would like to say a personal “thank you” to all who take the time to come out to the Saturday workdays, and to those who work on their blocks throughout the year. It is your hard work, ideas and continued support that makes the Blvd what it is…….a fabulous place to live!

I look forward to seeing you all on the Boulevard!

Volunteer Workdays Calendar 2008

2008 has been a great year for gardening on the Boulevard.  Chuck McMackin, our new gardener supervisor for the Richmond District, has come on board with six additional gardeners.  Born and raised in the Richmond, Chuck has a unique perspective on Park Presidio Boulevard.  Previously assigned to Golden Gate Park, he has enjoyed a long professional gardening career.  And for the first time in several years, the district gardening staff is filled!
